BECK WHEELER - Summer Days In The Wild West
3 Dec - 11 Jan 2015
Opening Event: Sunday 2 - 5pm 7th December
Summer Days in the Wild West is a mixed bag of colourful and wacky goodness, featuring Beck's most recent experiments in character abstraction.
"I have been taking animals and people and simplifying their forms down to basic shapes, then I inject colour, pattern and humour into these shapes to try and create something that is visually exciting. The biggest compliment I could get form this exhibition would be people leaving the gallery with a smile on their face. I don't think life needs to be taken too seriously, and neither does art. Have fun with it and enjoy! Cheers!"
Beck's artist residency in Japan earlier this year (in Itoshima, Fukuoaka) gave rise to inspiration for this exhibition. "It was an amazing experience that helped me solidify my artistic direction. I have always struggled between the idea of being a serious artist and being an illustrator and character designer. Being a character based artist is a bit of an odd thing in New Zealand. I think most people think I am a bit strange and loopy, but in Japan it is a completely normal thing.
I believe that animals and plants are as important as people. The easiest way for me to communicate this is to add human elements to animals via characterisation."
Please join us, celebrate Beck's latest creations and meet the artist on Sunday 7th December, 2-5pm.
