Karen Kennedy
Ceramicist
Karen has been making ceramic sculpture in the Henderson Valley for 35 years. She has her own electric kiln and studio. Most of her work consists of small figurines, dogs, cats, birds and pigs out of fine white clay. Some of these are whistles and ocarinas. They are painted and clear glazed to 1220oC. Her larger work is mostly dogs, made out of grogged clay.
Some of her recent work has been large animals made from hand dug wild clay from Glen Eden, Puhoi and Henderson Valley. It is exciting discovering the properties of wild clay and finding that it is usable. Karen teaches two classes a year. Small figurines and animals, and primitive pottery where there is no cost. Free clay, hand build and back yard fired. She has won over 30 awards for her ceramics.
