Kate Steiner
Printmaker & Linocut Artist
Kate Steiner is a self-taught Linocut Artist, living in the foothills of the Waitakere Ranges. Her work is heavily inspired by the unique coastline and bush of Aotearoa, and with a love of walking and photography, she is constantly sourcing new compositions.
Kate predominantly works using the Reduction technique, where a block is cut away with small chisels, and layers are built up, each being printed from the same piece of lino. By the end of the Limited Edition there is very little left on the lino block, so no more could ever be made.
Reduction printmaking requires a quiet methodical style and challenges the use of colour and vision into layers, so the learning never stops!
