Ronja Schipper
Jeweller & Object Artist
Growing up in an increasingly crowded Europe, the importance of the “reduce, re-use, recycle” mantra was instilled in Ronja by her parents, partly due to necessity, and it’s the same values she’s now hoping to instil in her children. Being a designer, seeing the potential in discarded materials and objects comes easy to her, and she loves experimenting with different materials, techniques and processes.
“I am passionate about re-purposing discarded items and materials, and turning them into meaningful objects of desire. In our time and place, it is absolutely necessary to look at the way we manage our limited resources and the pressure our consumer behaviour is placing on our unique planet. By using mostly waste material to create my jewellery and objects, I’m attempting to make a small contribution towards a change for a better world. I believe in changing the perception of under-valued resources through creative transformation, thus setting viewers and consumers on a more sustainable path for our future. By re-using discarded resources for creating my design pieces, I’m aiming to highlight the relationship with our at risk environment. My husband tells me that I’m “great at making something out of nothing”, and I have found that applying the lense of scarcity is very inspiring in the creative process, as it draws the focus inwards and highlights problem solving skills.”
